The History of the Candle Talo School
John Barry Meacham was a slaveholder in St. Louis, Missouri. He and his wife Mary started the Candle Talo School to educate enslaved people. The school was shut down because of an unjust new law that made it illegal for black children to be educated. But they were able to purchase some items from the now-defunct school so they could continue their work.
