Early Black Car Owners Experienced a Racist System
The automobile held out a lot of promise for African Americans and you can see people being excited about it like W.E.B. Dubois, who likes to drive. But the car also came with its own problems and there's this entire racialized and racist system built around the car. And then when cars are at the point where they offer people a certain freedom, which is to say you can drive long distance in the isn't, we begin to get these development of hotels, motels, service stations.
