labels mean something to the bearers of the label so that they say to themselves, they get up in the morning and they do things because they're men. So that's the basic structure of the identity labeling. And there's one other thing that should be said, whereas part of the basic theory as well, I think, which is that all of these things tend to be contested. What it means to me to be black or gay or whatever is, I mean, I may not be entirely clear about that. Other people may have views about what it means to them that I don't share. There's huge obviously disagreement about sometimes if at all we should take notice of people's identities
