People knew that the earth's crust was solid and like 50 or so years ago, people had figured out that the earth was solid underneath. We actually talked about that in our episode about how to measure the gravitational constant. But yeah, the basic question is if you have a solid crust, even if it's liquid underneath, how are the pieces of the solid crust slide? There's no like room for things to move.
