Is Vengeance the Right Word for Justice?
"I think i like your talk of moving to something, well, it's personal in some sense," he says. "It sort of may be some sort of elaboration of the idea of vengeance." The book ends with her saying that if judges had been honest about what the whole trial was about, this is what they would have said. But she still thinks she's grappling with something that does go beyond our usual intuitions about justice.
