Hippias and the Persians had sailed south around Attica at Cape Sunion for Athens. Datus, who was hoping to reach Phalron first, knew a force landing against a land army would have been a suicide mission. Herodotus tells a story about shield signals being flashed from Mount Pentelli to the Persian ships that let them know it was safe to advance on the city. It's hard to imagine how tired these hop lights were at this point, but if they wished to save Athens, they must keep going.
