The Right Track, Wrong Track Number
In an environment where there's only say three media channels that most people are watching, you can get a huge audience by playing things down the middle because there's not a whole lot of competition. But as the number of media channels grows from 3 to 10 to 10 million, suddenly whenever you're trying to create an audience, you're creating an audience in a environment that's extremely competitive and therefore antagonistic. In order to win audience, you have to be a talented catastrophist. And if you have a lot of people who are making that message, then you have structurally created a situation where the electorate is going to be consistently pessimistic about the state of the economy.
