The History of the CIA's Intervention in Italy
Gladio was established with a memorandum of understanding between Italy and the US Secret Service in 1956. The CIA relied on all kinds of methods to undermine foreign leaders, regimes opposed basically that they weren't communist. A secret organization called the Masonic Lodge Propaganda du P2 tried to propose an authoritarian term around Gladio. But obviously, it was completely discredited.
