The Ottoman Empire and the Battle of Vienna

In 1683 the Ottomans tried to capture Vienna. They had done this once before back in 1529 when the Empire was still very much on the rise. But then they were counter-attacked by a coalition of Christian states who rallied together and saved Vienna. In retrospect we can see that this defeat was the start of a long pattern of the empire losing its outlying provinces bit by bit, especially in the west,. with these new rising Christian powers challenging them year after year.
