Is There a Future for Multi Platform Programming?

Kotlin has the ability to write apps for Android, write servers, write web apps. It's a slim down version of what people are used to with Kotlin. But is there this possibility where some of these higher level languages that were not initially targeted at being systems languages can reach into that space? I think it depends on your use case probably.
