i suppose the thing that appeals most to a 20 first century mind set is his authenticity. He clearly was not a man who pretended to be anything other than what he was, both sexually and in terms of his intellectual pursuits and interests. And whether we can call him a gay icon or or a gay hero, i don't know, because that's a such a modern way of looking at identity.
