In ancient china, a physiological detection method was used to check if people were lying. The test involved putting dry rice in your mouth and then checking that you still had enough saliva for all the rice to come off your tongue. People from different accents would have different ways of pronouncing words such as "shibeleth" This allowed them to detect the lie based on a subtle clue that people didn't have easy conscious control over.
