I think on a lot of these issues, if that feedback loop was well functioning, Beijing would of course correct it on some important issues many times over the last five or so years. It feels like making blunt admissions that their own actions had catalyst effect, A, B, and C. I just think that's hard politically for them. Their frame for everything is the United States as puppet master and no ally in the region has agency. That kicks them in the butt every time because then they underestimate what the negative knock on effects are going to be of their own actions.
