There are two big barriers preventing a kind of big scale up of geothermal energy. The upfront capital cost that comes with drilling exploration is huge. Venture capital firms are proving a bit squeamish on that technology risk. And then the other big barrier is permitting the process that firms have to go through to get a project approved on federal land.
