The Effects of Colonialism in Southeast Asia
In Myanmar, the British colonists raised up ethnic minorities in order to kind of divide and rule. In Malaysia, you had the British bringing in huge numbers of ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indians to work with plantations in the mines. And then that created a sort of ethnic stratification which persists to the present in Malaysia. That's something that I think is more of a concern for a lot of Southeast Asian governments than sort of military invasion by the Chinese navy or what have you.
