The Gay Panic Defense in Tracy Tom's Case
January Marie Lapooze was a beloved local figure. No one could imagine why anyone would want her dead. The gay or trans-panic defense justified and excused violence and murder as a reaction to the victim's sexual orientation or gender identity. It would be removed from the Canadian Criminal Code in 2015, but that was three years after the story we're telling today.
