Transudative or Exudate Effusions?

Mary: Mira, one of the main criteria they used to help distinguish this is light's criteria. And I was wondering if you could just walk us through how she view that. Mira: Sure. So, light's criteria helps you identify transudate versus exudates. The three questions to ask are; ratio of total protein in the pleural fluid,  total protein in the serum, greater than 0.5 and LDH,. If yes, to any of these questions, then it's classified as an exudate. Mary: A common cause for misclassification is that acute diuresis can elevate total protein levels into the exudative range.
