Episode 96: The Bone Wars

Half-Arsed History

Como Bluff Quarry - A Case Study

Coke and Marsh continued to dig up bones in Wyoming and Colorado respectively until they had more bones than they knew what to do with. Allosaurus, Apatosaurus and the mighty Stegosaurus were amongst those described by Marsh after the Como Bluff find. Both men were engaged in a race to the bottom to prevent the other from successfully harvesting all of these bones. They filled in exhausted quarries, destroyed small or damaged fossils rather than let the other get their hands on them. There's even a story of a skirmish between Marsh and Cope's workers with a fort and through stones at each other like buddy kids at a playground mate.
