The Importance of Reconstruction in History
Reconstruction could be approached thematically instead of chronologically to work on that timing issue. Black citizens founded the first public school systems in the southern United States during Reconstruction. That sort of curricular shift can be quite powerful and there's no way to do it, but just thinking about history more in that lens can help.
