I think Bob Hoskins always talked about how he thought his big competition for the role is Paul Newman. There's this visual contrast with Bob and Roger Rabbit that I think makes them such a dynamic duo. It's kind of like Abbott and Costello. And you're right, he's not playing it for laughs.
