Schiller: Human experience has become radically fragmented in modernity, with our natural and rational selves divided against each other. Schiller pleads for the instincts to be made rational so that they may serve the cause of human freedom rather than hinder it. What force can deliver this altered humanity? How are these sensibilities to be educated? It would then be necessary to seek for this end an instrument that the state does not furnish, instrument of a nobleman of character.
