The brain plays with fire and positive feedback loops are anathema to engineers. But they're much snappier, faster and an you can compute much more sophisticated types of transformations. So my guess is that in order to maintain that balance without a lot of epilepsy, requires very, very sophisticated systems for for maintaining balance on time scalesof many seconds, minutes.
