The mortality raid among centurions was thus the highest in the army. Men clamored for the position because of the honor it brought them and their families. The basic theory was to attack first, with the front line only who young were strong and full of stamina. If this was not enough, however, the last line was ordered into support. But the old men were usually enough to break the back of a stubborn enemy.
