Pithakusa was a commercial settlement from its inception, what is often called an Emporion when founded by Greeks. The messiness around Pithakusa's origins was typical of the new Greek settlements that began to pop up in the western Mediterranean in the 8th century BC. Traditions may contain little nuggets of factual information but whether those individual nuggets were actually representative of the broader reality is open to question.
