It was a comparatively peaceful free trade zone with a measure of accommodation between islam, hinduism and buddhism. Their policy was to create an empire of forts and bases, held together by mobile sea power. They acquired the critical nodal points that controlled the trade of the sea from mosambique on the swahi coast to malacca on the malay peninsula which served as the lynch pin of trade with china.
