The Difference Between a Theorist and an Experimenter

LIGO is the laser interferometric gravitational wave observatory. Most physicists work essentially entirely in theory developing models for the universe or for things that happen in the universe. An experimenter designs experiments, builds apparatus to perform them in order to investigate the laws of nature and their predictions. Ray Weiss was a consummate experimenter who also understands theory quite deeply but focused his career on experiment primarily.
