In 19 32, a jail over at rikers island opened, and the penitentiary prisoners were transferred there. The almshouse w the very concept identified more with charles dickens stories than with useful care. Well, that was transformed into a modern hospital in 19 52, the bird s coler hospital named for the former commissioner who gave welfare island its name. Incidentally, coler is still there to day, part of the new york city health and hospital system. Then metropolitan hospital located in that old mental asylum. Whele they too left the island. By 19 57, the small pox hospital, which had the nursing school in it, and the city hospital building
