After 19 forty five. people are consumers, and almost as consumers, deciding which material right good to buy,. then also in their politics, they might consume in a rather similar way by choosi between different political parties. But i wanted to go further than that. I wanted to talk about the way in which then people actually behave towards each other in newly democratic ways. Up until 19 40 thyou know, the standard way of having a political debate in france was often to agin a certain amount of rather theatrical street fighting. After 19 50, you see very little of that in western europe because there is a broadly shared view that sort of violent, confrontational politics is not idea
