For me, I've often tried to break the spell of whether it's materialism or lust or anger, temper, those kinds of things. But see what the gospel truth is that actually turns that upside down on its head. God's love is given to you as a gift before you overcome and is promised to you whether or not you do overcome. It's only the assurance of that that will actually enable you to overcome.
