Kuhn's Theory of the Pendulum
Kuhn argues that science didn't just get an accumulation of new facts when it went from Aristotle to Newton. He says the very types of problems which were considered to be paradigmatic or central changed in this revolution. In Kuhn's view, scientific revolutions like political ones are a violent affair. They're not merely supplanting the current regime using the tools and structures that currently exist. Instead they often supplant the new theory by breaking the accepted practice of the old one.
