The production of steel requires intense heat, which accounts for the lion's share of its carbon footprint. But that heat does not necessarily have to come from burning fossil fuels. When cooked coal or coke is used to reduce iron ore into iron, that chemical process itself emits even more c o two. The process makes up about seven to eight % of global omissions.
