The Casco Bay Islands were once an exit val for folks who didn't fit into Portland's system. In the 20th century, affluent white manors started thinking of putting up summer houses on them for rich people. Local businesses start leaning on the local media to portray the Malagaites as an eyesore and a shame to the community. A flurry of local news articles like this one from the Casco Bay Breeze in 1905 described Malaga as "queer"
