The History of Crusading
Pope sanctioned preaching campaigns designed to stir up the spirit among warrior class of Europe. Pope Urban II responded to a call for aid from the Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenos with a public sermonic Claremont in 1095. This resulted in several years of absolute bloodbath and a huge swath of territory called the Crusader States under control of Latin Christian rulers.
