The Importance of Life

From IIT point of view, actually, it's a very specific kind of functionalism. So if you just replace the each neuron with a functional equivalent, and they're all connected up the same way, then I think IIT would say, yeah, it's going to be conscious in the same way. But if you just replicate the whole input output structure with a different kind of functional equivalent that had a different causal mechanism...then IIT would says it's not conscious. You don't have to be made out of meat. The story about life is back to this idea of what brains are ultimately for, and that ultimately for the maintenance of the organism in the state of being alive
