i'm starting to synthesize that the risk reward relationship being so different between old people and young people is largely a result of the younger people having stronger immunity in general. But i also think just stronger mucosal immunity in general and social immunity, is not just innate. And there was one study that showed that if you got a cold in the week before you got it completely destroyed your immune system within 24 hours. So these kids are just sticking their fingers in everything - they're always sticking their hands down. They can actually mount an effective response when they get sick.
