The Use of Screening to Identify Risk

The way that screening is actually intended to be used, the way that screening instruments have been developed. The idea a in the way this should be implemented in response intervention system is that screening should be brief measures that are used within school settings. It's not because we want to take data from that measure and go out and just teach students the letters until they have that down. But letter names is highly predictive. Student's ability to recognize letter names early on in elementary school is highly preductive of their proficiency at the end of the school year,. And so by assessing that early on, we have an indicator of whether or not a student is likely to meet grade level goals without any other support provided
