Even though we're nearing the last century of the anglo saxon period, note how traditional this poem sounds. It almost sounds like an excerpt from beowulf with its praise of the germanic warrior code. The language and poetry of wessex was still relatively unchanged. In fact, it's difficult find any old norse influences in the poem we just looked at.
