The opening chord played by jony on the acousta guitar is basically an a sus two. It's an open a with a e like a fifth, and then a b instead of a third. She has the guitar strings tuned in a pretty different way than standard tuning. The major seventh sound is the defining sound of help me.
There are few singer-songwriters as inimitable as Joni Mitchell, with her swirling song forms, leaping melodies, and that magical voice, untethered by the laws of gravity. On this episode, Kirk takes a deep dive into Joni's 1974 song "Help Me," a hummingbird of a tune hovering between commitment and flight, tumbling and falling past love and toward freedom.
