Is the Immune System Going Beyond Self and Non-Self?

The whole idea of this debate is hinged on, you know, self as a non-self. The immune system discriminates an infectious particle from a non-infectious particle. What is clear is that not all non-self are dangerous and not all self are in it. And for me as an immunologist, what that tells me is that we cannot be dogmatic about things. I think immunology is very, very complex. It's one of the most complex elements of living organism biology. Our knowledge about an understanding of it is constantly evolving and expanding. So in the face of evidence, we should be willing to change our position.
