In 1910, Mary Mallon was released on the condition that she promised not to work as a cook anymore and to report back to be tested. She agreed to the terms but then promptly disappeared and never went back for a checkups. In 1915, Soapra had resumed his work as a sanitary engineer and was in the process of investigating an outbreak of typhoid at Sloan maternity hospital. He learned that some of the staff referred to a typhoid Mary cook who seemed linked to the outbreak. But Mary Mallon had been going by a different name.
