Abusive situations activate parts in our brain that would not be activated otherwise. Troma bonding feels like being stuck between two opposing views. We go into a state of denial to protect ourselves from abuse. Denial is the most primitive psychological defence mechanism we have, because it keeps us locked in our comfort zone.
