The Effect of Religion on Civic Identity
As traditional religion has atrophied that impulse to have something which provides order and meaning to the universe in a sense of belonging has not gone away. In an absence of organized religion, people have turned to politics, which has become the new religion. The jokes have become shrill, and they sound to me like a one-note court. There's no variety to the joke at all. It's all Donald Trump's stupid. But five, six years ago, there were no jokes when Barack Obama was banning the ship. We're not allowed humor under Democratic administrations; we get terribly humor under Republican ones.
