John Bull and the Britannia War

John bull was a figure of international relations in the seventeenth century. He represented britannia as female, which is an interesting image to run alongside his male persona. John Bull's pamphlets were circulated through coffee house clubs where political discussion could take place. The government did not enforce direct censorship of literature after 16 95 except for the 17 37 theatrical licensing act. People were prosecuted including William holne and Dela reviere manley who wrote more conduct than Stu Mile.
