The difference between the first living organism and the last universal common ancestor is potentially huge. We don't know where life emerged, but there's an alternative set of ideas that it might have been a planetary process from the start. And so then I became deeply interested in what is life? And how do we quantify it? Could we build theory for understanding the transition from non-life to life? What would that theory look like? So that we could actually build better original life experiments.
