The Time of Troubles
The death of fyodor in 15 98 gave way to 20 years of internal noble civil war over who should succeed him. There was also a massive peasant uprising in the south as those peasants sought to resist the spread of serfdom. And basically all state coherence broke down, and various armed bands of dubious political legitimacy just roamed around. In 16 13, an assembly of the land came together with nobles and urch leaders representing more than 50 different cities to elect one czar that they could all agree to follow. Mihail romanoff would see russia out of the time of troubles and point them towards a coming golden age of a new russian empire.
