When china joined the w t othe one of the conditions were to have certain sectors be opend up to co foreign competiton. Foreign companies wanted to come in for the chinese market. Some even voluntarily traded in some of their key technologies. But it's trump that the trade war can almost be s set as thought of as a trategic gift, because it's pushing for greater reforms and more opening up.
