Shostak started to fixate on the origins of life back in the 1990s. His lab was working on what we call directed evolution. Directed evolution means introducing mutations to molecules, looking for variants that could be useful and then allowing those novel molecules to reproduce. Think of it like GMO foods, but for molecules like RNA.
