Teachers are notorious for responding to students confusion hint giving, rather than letting them grapple. In japan, there is this concept called bancho, or boncho. And boncho is a collective method of teaching that naturally forces students to struggle with one problem. 20 % of us classroom questions started as making connection problems but by the time they were done twisting the teacher's arm, zero per cent had been solved.
