The Role of Reason in Political Decision-Making
In Chesterton's Thomas, he makes a rather surprising claim at one point. He describes Thomas as a liberal, right? In other words, his liberalism was a kind of far-sighted political rationalism. If we need reason to guide us in our political life, if reason is what sets the standards of right and wrong, how does it do so? For both Thomas and Chesterton, that question can be answered largely with one word: nature.
