The Effects of Propofol on Pain

Dr. Foreman: The mechanism of pain is through activation of trip-V capsaicin receptors that mediate the burning sensation. If you want to avoid pain on propofol injection, the two most effective measures described in the literature are to place your IV in a large and a cubital vein or to inject 40 milligrams or more of lidocaine into an occluded vein and wait a minute before injecting propofol.
